Jennifer MacLean wears a lot of hats: writer, performer, director and, for the last 3 ½ years, paper ones made by her daughter. Before that, she could be seen performing stand up comedy at festivals and on television. After that petered out, she moved behind the camera working as a producer for Telepictures, ABC Family, MTV, TLC and the Animal Planet. She co-produced the celebrated HBO documentary, The End. And it all came full-circle when she produced and starred in her own pilot for A&E entitled, I’m Jennifer MacLean.

TANNING SAVED MY MARRIAGE

If you were to ask Loretta when things changed she would have said right after her husband Gene started tanning. Before that things were always negative. No they couldn’t go to Hawaii. No he didn’t want to go to the casino and play bingo. No he wasn’t interested in dance lessons. But after three sessions at Safeglo he was a new man. A new, albeit oranger, man. Last Thursday, they’d gone to a salsa class at the Senior Center and Saturday they were going out for Indian food. Imagine that!

A FATHER’S LOVE

With dirty overalls and sloppy hair she sat quietly by the pond. Carefully, she cupped her hands to protect the delicate tadpole she had just “rescued”.

He squatted down next to her and with a gentle voice he taught about the life of a frog. He put his hands around hers and together they let the tadpole swim back toward deeper waters.

They were best friends. He told her everything, and she made everything better. He supported her dreams and with his help they made all those dreams come true.

There is nothing more wonderful than a father’s love.

MEMORIES

The sweet, rotten smell of tomatoes wafting in warm, arid winds and the jingle “tomato, tomato, from Sacramento va-a-lley”…take her back to her 6 year-old self. Memories of when the kids on the block swarmed the mail lady for her daily dishing of lemon drop candies, when I tied myself up to the front door and barked like a dog waiting for someone, anyone, to let me in the house. The Datsun and it’s fragrance of vinyl seating, rose air freshener, and my sister’s vomit. Fond memories.

THE CHAIR I’M SITTING IN

This chair belonged to the CEO of a major company. He sat in it everyday, yelled at his employees and competitors and made phone calls to his mistress. One day, the CEO, sat in the chair watching his company’s stock go up. He kicked his heels up on the desk. The chair’s spring had loosened from over-use and he fell backwards, smashed through the window and died. The company’s stock plummeted amidst rumors that he committed suicide due to improprieties. They liquidated and I bought the chair for a song.

AUDITION

The Pantene audition called for girls with short hair. The waiting room looked like a lipstick lesbian bar on a Friday night. Libby knew she perspired more than the average person so she came prepared. She gripped her arms close to her side so the wads of toilet paper acting as a dam wouldn’t fall out. The cool and dry Katie Holmes replica on deck headed for the room. She’d be fine as long as she didn’t have to move her arms. “Libby Bender, you’re up!”
